Sex Signals Opens Eyes of Students

By Cara Hunt

Rape is the number one offense committed in the United States that goes unreported. It happens all of the time, and nobody knows that is goes on.
On Tuesday, October 13th, 2009, Sex Signals came to MCC and talked to the students about rape and the effects of what it can do. George and Lucy, the presenters of Sex Signals, gave the students scenarios in which the act of rape was committed and the students had to discuss what should and needed to be done.  During the discussion, students could tell that there is a gray area when it comes to rape. One of the most effective ways to get rape known out there is communication and getting help.
If you are in a situation where you go to a party and you are thinking about what you want to do, be smart and think of ways to keep yourself from getting into trouble that would lead to a situation you don’t want to be in. If you happen to make a wrong choice and an act of violence is committed against you, don’t be afraid to tell someone.
It is important to tell someone if it happens to you. Rape can happen to men and women. One of the reasons that cases are not reported is because the survivor is either scared or embarrassed because of what happened.  You should also never be afraid to tell anyone about this.
If you find yourself in this kind of situation, there is a hotline here in McCook that can help you out. They don’t judge; they can point you in a direction with resources that are available. The number to the hotline is 308-345-5534.
